Trish Notes on 9/16 Hilton Game
These are just my thoughts and suggestions. You may have differing observations and you may have identified other areas of focus, which is fine. Just wanted to share my thoughts with you.
DEFENSE
Looked much better overall
Positives
Tori played well (though she got called for 3rd man obstruction several times)
Sophie played well… much stronger than in previous games
Casey solid center back (but her lack of reliability due to injury in problematic)
Good strong free hits for the majority of the game
Better outletting to sideline
Better and stronger circle play (denied repeated shots from Hilton on several occassions… fantastic defensive save by Sophie… overall, I thought Lucy had more vision on the ball and, while Lucy’s clears were not always the strongest, the defenders picked up the ball off her pads better than in previous games)
Negatives
Hilton scored 3 goals on us (video will help us break down what happened… I’m hoping to review prior to 8:30am today and will send clips)
EHS did get called for third man obstruction a lot inside our circle
MIDS and BOD
POSITIVES
Shannon had some strong moments in 3rd and 4th quarter… stayed on ball longer to win it and pass through
Addy had another solid performance
I thought Quinn had her best performance at BOD yesterday… ran onto ball to make interceptions…carried ball appropriately out wide and made good passing choices…. I though she covered middle of the field very well throughout the game
Anita played OK… dont really have notes on her… (her lack of reliability due to injury is problematic)
NEGATIVES
They need to take their free hits much faster AND use self-starts to gain an advantage
They need to focus on getting ball to goal past the 40yd line…. hard free hits to opposite post
Recovery into deep defense on breakaways was not consistent (far side mid needs to get the jump on a breakaway that occiurs on the opposite side of field)
Mids and BOD Need to recognize opportiunities to work with defenders to double and trap ball carrier
FORWARDS and TOD
This is the area of the field that needs the most work
Nicole - played better. needs to be reminded to run onto every ball (dont watch). her distribution hits were stronger (she made good choices). She added strength to our attack yesterday by joining the forward line. Helped to draw corners. Executed corners well.
Salice - her skills are fine, but she needs confidence to take ball to goal on her own. She did a great job getting ball to goal (we just need players who can finish the ball for her). She drew corners. She executed corners well. I think Salice needs to develop a stronger “go to goal” mentality. While she is a generous player who sets up multiple opportunities for corner deflections into goal, her teammates aren’t yet ready to convert those balls to goals. She needs to start doing it herself.
Isla - played OK… good effort… but she gets called for hacking alot and she is slow (cannot generate a breakaway at wing)
Emma - played OK, but we should be getting more out of her in games. She needs to carry ball more by taking it wide to sideline. she needs to sharpen her give and go passing… she needs to improve her usefulness in our attack circle. I honestly think she is the best option we have to finish Salice’s balls sent to post. We just need to get her more focused on scoring and she needs to practice with Salice
Kenadie - she has speed, but yesterday she really did not add much to our attack. Did not win ball. Did not carry ball.
Ambri - I think she needs to get more playing time. She is faster than Isla. She has better stick skills that Kenadie. She does not get hacking calls. She can play in deep attack space at post more reliably than Isla (though they all need more work on this)
Camila - I do not feel as strong a need to get her into games, as she is still not attending practices regularly
GOALKEEPERS
Lucy - she did OK yesterday, but her clears were not strong. Some one-on-one time with Kristyn might help and a practice with lots of shots on goal.
Bri - She is not displaying a strong desire at practices or games to earn game time
3 Biggest Things to work on at practice today:
High repetition/High intensity HARD 16 yard hits right and left so wings and mids can practice handling a hard hit…. running onto a long hit-then carry ball-then pass back in to Nicole or Salice…. dead stopping a diagonal hit to sideline-then controlling ball-then carry and/or quick pass back in to Nicole or Salice. This is especially important on left side. We are losing the ball anytime we try to generate an attack from the left (unless Nicole is playing left forward)
Perhaps start focusing on Emma at right wing (with Kenadie as sub) and Isla/Ambri at left wing.
We need to develop both Emma and Kenadie as confident and fast ball carriers with a hard cross
We need to develop Isla and Ambri as reliable pass receivers on left to deliver on give and gos with Salice AND to get to left post to score. (I dont see either of them becoming strong ball carriers for breakaways… they need clearly defined responsibilities and limited responsibilities to suuport the more creative “play maker” roles of Nicole and Salice)
High repetition/high intensity MIDS hard hits from 30 yard line to far post of goal cage…. Forwards and TOD add a stick as ball goes past them…. We need to develop faster and stronger paths of getting ball to goal once we are in our attacking 1/3
High repetition & high intensity & high competition OFFENSE vs DEFENSE from 30 yard line to goal
2v1 plus GK. 3v2 plaus GK. 4v3 plus GK
Focusing attack on fastest most direct ways to score goals
Focusing defense on cleanly winning ball and clearing… focusing on good communication…. focusing on GK being key communicator under pressure
